Digger Slew Ring Diagnosis, Replacement and Quality Specs
The slewing bearing (Digger Slew Ring) of the excavator is the key large-diameter bearing connecting the chassis and the superstructure. Whether the machine can rotate smoothly 360 degrees and whether it can carry the heavy load during operation depends on this component. If you find metal chips in the discharged waste grease, or detect that the axial clearance exceeds 2.0mm, do not hesitate, this means that the slewing bearing has failed and must be replaced immediately.
For most excavators that have been out of the warranty period, choosing a high-quality auxiliary plant (Aftermarket) slewing bearing is a routine operation in the industry. As long as the right material is selected-usually 42CrMo or 50Mn steel, and the tooth surface hardness reaches HRC 55-60-this choice can save 40% to 60% of the cost than the original parts, and the service life can still last for 6000 hours.
How to Diagnose excavator slew ring Failure
According to my experience on the spot, to judge whether this thing is completely broken, it is enough to do the following 3 tests:
The Grease Purge Test
This is the most reliable indicator. Wipe around the seal ring and drive fresh butter into the bearing while rotating the cab.
What to look at: Staring at the old oil being squeezed out. If you see silver metal flakes, iron filings, or even metal fragments, it means that the internal raceway has spalled (Spalling). This bearing is considered a complete waste. Stop immediately, unless you want to watch the cab separate from the chassis.
The Sound Test
Slowly turn the upper structure.
Symptoms: If you hear a continuous, grinding-like “crunch” sound, usually the raceway is damaged. However, if you hear 1 loud “bang” or “click” when you rotate to the same fixed position every 1 turns, there is a high probability that the ring gear has broken its teeth.
Clearance Test
The dial indicator is mounted on the frame, the machine is supported by the big arm and then put down, and the displacement between the upper structure and the chassis is measured.
Limit value: Although the specifications of different tonnages are different, according to my rule of thumb, if the axial clearance of the slewing bearing significantly exceeds 2.0mm to 3.0mm, it is the red line. If the gap is too large, your rotary motor pinion (Pinion Gear) will soon be destroyed by this amount.
OEM vs. Aftermarket Solutions
Original parts: if it is a new machine that is still under warranty, the original factory must be used. But to tell you the truth, for an old excavator that has been used for 5 years, the price of the original parts is really hard to handle.
Sub-factory parts: The water in this market is a bit deep. A high-quality auxiliary factory circle, the function is no different from the original, but the price is only half.
Trap: Don’t touch the “lowest price on the whole network” in the market “. Those bargains are usually made of recycled steel, and the heat treatment process is a mess. If this defective product is installed on a machine with heavy load (such as breaking hammer), the teeth will crack in less than 500 hours. To buy this thing, you have to know the parameters to avoid the pit.
How to Verify Slew Ring Quality
When you go to a supplier to make an inquiry, you can directly throw them these 3 questions, and the other party will know that you are an expert:
Is this ring made of 50Mn or 42CrMo?
50Mn (carbon manganese steel): the standard configuration of small and medium-sized digging, cost-effective.
42CrMo (chrome molybdenum steel): This is a professional grade choice. Its tensile strength and impact resistance are stronger.
Expert advice: If your machine is more than 20 tons, or you often dry crushing operations, be sure to stick to 42CrMo.

What is the Induction Hardening Depth?
The teeth and raceway must be heat treated to resist compression.
Standard: The surface hardness should be HRC 55-60.
Details: The key is that the effective quenching depth should be at least 4mm to 6mm. If the quenching is too shallow, the tooth surface will quickly appear pitting and spalling.
Can you provide the dimension drawing?
Never place an order just by reporting a model (such as “PC200-8”). It is common for mainframe factories to change specifications in the middle of production. Professional suppliers will send you 1 technical drawings to check the key data:
