A heavy-duty slewing bearing is the rotating support between a machine structure and its turntable, boom, platform or working attachment. Unlike a simple radial bearing, it can be selected to carry axial thrust, radial load and overturning moment at the same time while the assembly turns slowly or oscillates. That combination is why slewing bearings are used in cranes, excavators, rotary platforms, stackers and wind-energy equipment.

The inner and outer rings provide the mounting interfaces, while the raceways and rolling elements distribute the load around the bearing circumference. Mounting holes transfer the machine load into the ring, and the rolling-element arrangement affects stiffness, capacity, deflection and the smoothness of low-speed rotation. A bearing that looks large enough by diameter alone may still be unsuitable if its moment load, bolt pattern or structural support is not matched to the machine.

Four-point contact ball bearings are a common compact solution for combined axial, radial and moment loads. Crossed-roller designs place cylindrical rollers at right angles to raise stiffness and control deflection under moment loads. Multi-row roller bearings use more rolling elements and a deeper load path when very high radial capacity or heavy structural duty is the priority. These are directional choices: the machine load spectrum, rotation, available envelope and required stiffness determine which arrangement is appropriate.

The drive interface is a separate part of the selection. An internal gear, external gear or gearless ring changes where the pinion or motor connects and how much clearance the machine needs. Gear position, pitch data, bolt-circle geometry and access for installation must agree with the surrounding structure. A useful bearing request includes the outside and inside diameters, height, bolt-hole pattern, gear data, axial and radial loads, overturning moment, speed and operating environment. The supporting structure must be machined and assembled accurately, and the gear alignment must be controlled so the drive does not introduce avoidable noise, uneven wear or resistance. Sealing, lubrication and inspection requirements also depend on the machine environment and service plan.
